Auli is approximately 280-290 km from Dehradun (9-10 hours) and around 270 km from Haridwar (9 hours) by taxi, reached via Rudraprayag and Joshimath. The skiing season runs January through March, when snow cover is best. Auli is connected to Joshimath by a scenic ropeway or a short road drive. Auli Taxi Package: Distance, Fare & Skiing Season Guide
Auli is Uttarakhand's best-known winter destination — a ski resort with sweeping views of Nanda Devi and the surrounding Himalayan range. Here's what to know before planning your trip.
Distance & route
- From Dehradun: approximately 280-290 km, around 9-10 hours by road via Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, and Joshimath
- From Haridwar: approximately 270 km, around 9 hours via the same corridor
Given the distance, most travelers treat this as a two-day journey with an overnight halt around Rudraprayag or Joshimath, rather than attempting it in a single long drive.
Reaching Auli from Joshimath
Auli sits about 10-16 km from Joshimath, connected either by road or by India's longest and highest cable car (ropeway) — a genuinely scenic way to arrive, weather permitting. Many travelers take the ropeway up and the road down, or vice versa, just to experience both.
Best time to visit
- January to March — peak skiing season, best snow cover, the main reason most people visit
- April to June — post-winter, meadows and clearer valley views without snow
- September to November — post-monsoon clarity, good for the ropeway and views without the ski crowd
- Avoid peak monsoon (July-August) — road conditions on this corridor can be unpredictable, same as the rest of the Chardham/Joshimath route
Combining Auli with Badrinath
Since Auli is reached via Joshimath — the same town that serves as the last major halt before Badrinath — many travelers combine the two. If you're planning a winter visit, note that Badrinath itself closes in mid-November, so a combined trip works best just before closing or after the temple reopens the following spring. Outside the Chardham season, Auli stands well on its own as a winter/skiing destination.
What a taxi package includes
- Transport from Dehradun or Haridwar to Joshimath, with an overnight halt en route
- Local transfer from Joshimath to the Auli ropeway station or road access point
- Return journey, with flexibility for extra days if you're skiing or want more time on the slopes
Vehicle recommendation
Given winter road conditions — including icy patches at altitude — Innova or Innova Crysta are generally the more comfortable and stable choice for this route. Our drivers are experienced with winter mountain driving on this specific corridor.
